Roundabout Paving at NIU
As part of a broader effort to modernize infrastructure and improve traffic movement, Curran Contracting partnered with Elliot & Wood Inc. to complete a newly paved $1.8 million roundabout on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois.
This three-month project required significant amount of coordination and planning, including the removal of the existing intersection, sitework, and the relocation and improvement of pedestrian crossings. Ultimately replacing it with a freshly paved single-lane, three-leg roundabout.
Modern roundabouts, like the one now in place at Lucinda Avenue and Normal Road, are designed to move traffic counterclockwise around a central island. This design eliminates left turns across opposing traffic and reduces the number of conflict points where accidents can occur. Reducing injury crashes by 75 percent and reducing pedestrian crashes by 30-40 percent.
For NIU students, staff and visitors this project aims to support the daily travel needs of a busy campus while keeping travelers safer. With extensive experience in roundabout construction, Curran has successfully built and paved many of the roundabouts in the area that drivers rely on every day.
