On October 7th, Curran partnered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to host a community, Out of the Darkness™ walk in DeKalb, IL. The walk, which was held at Hopkins Park, helped to raise both awareness and funds for suicide prevention. With the goal of raising $20k for the Illinois chapter of the AFSP, the event far exceeded expectations, raising a total of $27,495.
While the financial goals of the event were met, most of the money came from individual donations of the over 130 event participants, many of whom had lost someone to suicide. The community came together, resonating with one mission: suicide is preventable, and no one is alone. The AFSP, which has been organizing walks since 2004, has impacted over 400 communities to create a culture that destigmatizes, recognizes, and supports the importance of mental health. To everyone that donated their time and resources to impact this day, thank you.
